PROSTATE-SPECIFIC ANTIGEN (PSA)
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Its main function is to thin the ejaculate and increase sperm motility. PSA also plays a role in dissolving cervical mucus, allowing sperm to enter the uterus. Small amounts of PSA are normally found in the blood of men with a healthy prostate. However, PSA levels can increase due to prostate pathologies (prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, etc.), naturally with aging, or after surgery or specific prostate exams (such as a rectal exam or prostate biopsy).

RECOMMENDED USERS The PSA test is indicated for: Men without symptoms, over 45 years of age, who want to monitor their prostate health; Men with urinary tract symptoms, such as difficulty urinating, pain or increased urinary frequency.

WHY - BENEFITS Checking your PSA level is useful for assessing the health of your prostate. In the case of cancer, early detection and prevention can save lives.

TEST PRINCIPLE The PSA test is an immunochromatographic assay that detects the presence of PSA by means of gold-conjugated monoclonal antibodies embedded in the reactive strip.
